I think it's wise to begin with books that contain a subject matter within my comfort zone, and not dive in with some Edgar Allan Poe, the fact I'm using him as my most out-there example is probably very telling!
My first attempt is going to be Emma, by Jane Austen. I think it is a book that most young women should read, going by what I've read and heard of it. It will certainly break me in gently.
I shall be back to give my humble opinion of it, probably in some weeks as I'm a rather slow reader, in a bit of a Julie & Julia style.

This is my first book, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sucked in a little by the pretty covet illustration, but that was not the deciding factor.
I'm quite certain no-one is reading this, but just in case...recommendations welcome!

Meep! I'm a big reader but have hardly read any of the classics - kudos to you for giving it a shot. Am diving into some Siri Hustvedt books at the moment following lots of recommendations, so maybe her..? Also, Haruki Murakami - try Norwegian Wood. It'll make you cry! ...but in a good way. :-) Anna xx
Hey Anna! Thanks for the comment, so far I'm loving Emma. Ros doesn't see why, she thinks its a silly book! The character Emma is cool though.
I am a very slow reader so I'm not even halfway through it but I will eventually check out your recommendations
